The surgery itself is often the easy part. The harder part comes after: you’re home, you’re sore, you have a stack of discharge papers, and nobody checks on you until a follow-up appointment that’s still two weeks away. That gap is where small problems can grow quietly. I’m Kate, a family nurse practitioner, and I provide post-surgical care at home across the North Shore. I visit you during your recovery, check how you’re healing, and make sure you have someone to ask when something doesn’t look or feel right.

I start by asking how you’re feeling, and then I look. I check your incision to see that healing is on track, and for anything your surgeon would want to know about, like increasing redness, swelling, or drainage. I check your vital signs and ask about your pain, your sleep, your appetite, and how you’re moving around.
Then I go through your medications. After surgery you may have new pain medicine on top of your regular prescriptions, and the combination matters. We put together a simple schedule so you know what to take and when.
I follow your surgeon’s instructions. My job is to be a set of trained eyes at home between appointments, and to pass along anything that needs their attention.

You’re home after a planned operation and want someone checking on you

You live alone, or family can’t be there all day

You’re unsure about your pain medication or your dressing

Getting back to the surgeon’s office is hard right now
I’m not here to replace your surgeon or your primary care doctor
I work alongside them. After I see you, I pass along what I found, including how the incision looks, how your pain is doing, and the questions you meant to ask. If something needs their attention, I contact them directly, so you don’t have to chase an answer by phone.
It also helps to have one person looking at the full picture
your surgery, your usual medications, and your other health conditions, all together.

Post-surgical care is for recovering from a planned operation. If you were in the hospital for an illness, a fall, or a flare-up of a condition, Post-Discharge Care is the better fit. Many people also come home with new prescriptions, so Medication Management often goes hand in hand with recovery.

It's care during your recovery after a planned operation, delivered at your home. I check your incision, your pain, your medications, and your overall health, and I keep your surgeon and doctors informed.
That depends on your situation and your surgeon's plan. Call as soon as you know your discharge date and we'll talk through timing.
