Patient Advocacy on Boston's North Shore

Almost everyone has left an appointment realizing they forgot to ask the most important question. Or they came home with an explanation full of medical terms, or a worry they never felt comfortable raising. When you’re unwell, or caring for someone who is, that gap can feel enormous.

I’m Kate, a family nurse practitioner, and I provide patient advocacy across the North Shore. I help you understand your care, make sure your doctors hear what matters, and speak up with you when it counts.

Why Many People Need a Second Voice

Appointments are short and the system is complicated. Doctors use language that makes sense to them and not always to you. A symptom that seems small to you may be exactly what they need to hear, and the thing that worries you most may never come up.

Having someone who understands both sides makes a difference. I know what your primary care provider and specialists need to hear, and I can explain what they said in a way that makes sense to you.

What Patient Advocacy Looks Like With Me

I start by listening: to your symptoms, your history, your worries, and what you want from your care. Then I help you get ready for appointments by writing down what you want to ask and what your doctor should know.

If you’d like, I come with you to the appointment. I help make sure your concerns are heard, your questions are answered, and nothing gets brushed aside. Afterward, I go through what was said in plain words, so you leave knowing what was decided and why.

When it’s needed, I also talk directly with your healthcare team, so your symptoms and history reach them clearly.

What Each Visit Includes

Who This Is For

This kind of care tends to help most when
You leave appointments confused or unsure what was said

You have a serious diagnosis and many decisions ahead

You find it hard to speak up for yourself with doctors
You’re helping a parent who needs someone beside them

Working With Your Doctors

I’m not here to take over from your doctors or to argue with them. Good advocacy works best when everyone is on the same side. I speak with your doctors respectfully, share what I’ve learned about your situation, and ask the questions you want answered.

The decisions are always yours. My job is to make sure you have the information you need and that your wishes are heard and respected.

Advocacy, Coordination, and Support

Advocacy gives you a voice at appointments. If you also need your doctors connected behind the scenes, Coordination with Specialists does that. Medication Management helps when your medicines are part of the confusion, and Palliative Support is there when a serious illness means hard decisions.

Helping a Parent Be Heard

If your parent sees doctors on their own, or you worry they can’t get a word in, I can help. I visit them at home, listen to what matters to them, and, with their permission, go with them to appointments. You can join by secure video to hear what I hear and ask your own questions.

Cost and Scheduling

My services are private duty and self-pay. Please call or email for current rates, including for joining appointments, before your first visit. I see patients Monday to Friday from 8 to 6 and Saturday from 10 to 3, at home or by secure video.
